What If I Don't Get My Healing Or Answer

Introduction

There are those who will tell you that a labyrinth has mystical powers, that it can concentrate forces and channel them.  We don't know if that is true or not.  All we can say is that we believe labyrinths helped to give us peace of mind, psychic strength and created an atmosphere where we could open ourselves to answers. And that is the best kind of healing there is...

The human body is a self-healing mechanism.  It will heal itself from many things if we give it rest and energy.  The human psyche is more complicated.  It needs the opportunity to ask questions, listen for answers, and a safe place in which to recall its difficult times.  A labyrinth can provide all of that.  And more.

Labyrinths To Use For Healing

If you can, try to find a full sized labyrinth to walk.  Engaging your body and your mind is very beneficial.

Building Your Own Labyrinth: If you have a piece of land or a large room that you would like to devote to a labyrinth, there are excellent resources available.  You will find directions for building the classic Cretan or Chartres labyrinths in Helen Curry's book The Way of the Labyrinth

Locating Labyrinths In Your Area: But if you aren't fortunate enough to live on thirty-five acres and have your own labyrinth like we do, there are other alternatives:  Check the Labyrinth Locators found on the Resources page.  Hopefully there is a public labyrinth near you.  Or you can use a...

Finger Labyrinth:  Finger labyrinths are miniature labyrinths that can be held in your hand or used on a table top.  Commercial ones have either a raised circuit wall or a grooved base to be used as a path for your finger to follow.  You "walk"  the labyrinth by tracing its path with your finger.  If you are physically challenged, as Cee was for some weeks after coming out of the coma, you can trace the labyrinth pattern with your eyes.  Visually walking the labyrinth is very challenging and requires good concentration, making it a wonderful technique for focusing your energy.  You can...

buy finger labyrinths from us. (Yes, that's a shameless sales pitch, but we're proud of our products.  Jump to Our Products.),
buy them from someone else,
or make your own.  Helen's book, The Way of the Labyrinth, has instructions for making your own finger labyrinths.  And, no, she doesn't know we are doing such a good job of promoting her book.  We just think it's great.

Purpose and Intent

Purpose and intent.  Does that sound redundant?  It isn't.  Purpose is a result we aim at.  Intent is the frame of mind with which we seek the purpose. Both are crucial to a discussion of healing and the labyrinth.

When you approach the labyrinth in healing, you should always ask yourself your purpose for requesting healing. The body's healing is powered by the mind and by the spirit or soul.  We have to seek healing in the core of us in order for it to happen.

Ask yourself what is the purpose for your request for healing.  Think deeply about it.  Try and be as honest with yourself as you can be.  Realize that many illnesses of the body or the mind have a beginning and basis in the soul.

Now focus on your intent.  Make sure that you are opening yourself up to the Universe instead of trying to force your intentions on the Divine.  We believe that our requests are answered and often those answers are not the ones we thought we'd get.  So open your heart and your mind.

Include a request for understanding as a part of the healing.  Our illnesses or difficulties often stem from a more fundamental problem that we are ignoring or repressing.  Asking and listening for understanding of the situation can be crucial to healing.

Creating a Healing Affirmation

Before you walk the labyrinth, create a healing affirmation for yourself.  Affirmations should be:

in the present tense  (You always want to act "as if" the healing had already taken place.  Where the mind goes, the body follows.  In other words, if your head says it's already happened, your body will work to make it so.  Psyche yourself out. Brainwash yourself.)
positive, (Always, always reinforce the positive.)
and short.  (That old "Keep It Simple" principle is still the best advice.)

Your affirmation should be a simple mantra that you can hold in your mind and repeat over and over to yourself as you walk the labyrinth.

Examples might be:

I glow with health and strength.
I am financially healthy.
I love and I am loved.

The books by Louise Hay (You Can Heal Your Life is a true classic) and  Pocketful of Miracles: Prayers, Meditations, and Affirmations to Nurture Your Spirit Every Day of the Year by Joan Borysenko give excellent examples affirmations.  Check out the Resources page for more suggestions.

Walking the Labyrinth

Once you have clearly stated your purpose, clarified your intention and created an affirmation to help you focus, you are ready to walk the labyrinth.  We suggest that you ask permission of the labyrinth to enter its space.  The labyrinth represents a journey to the center of your soul, to the center of your spirituality.  You should honor its space just as you might that of a consecrated church or other spiritual center.

Now walk (or trace the finger labyrinth) at your pace.  Ignore the world around you and focus on your affirmation.  If your attention wanders, allow it.  We often have memories or seemingly unrelated thoughts pop into our heads while we walk.  These random thoughts may be part of your answer.  Give them a little room to grow, but if they just seem to be ordinary distractions pull your focus back by reciting your affirmation.

When you reach the center, give yourself time to tune into your heart.  Listen to your body.  Touch the Spirit.  Feel your connection with All That Is.

If you are in a place where you can make sound without disturbing others, breathe in slowly through your nose, hold the breath for a moment and then breathe out firmly through your mouth.  Blow like you are blowing out a lot of candles on a birthday cake.  Blow all your troubles and negative energy out.

Now, do that again.  But this time put your voice behind the exhalation.  When you blow out, make as loud a sigh as you can.  Or moan.  (But please don't do this in a hospital room. It tends to alarm the staff!) Allow any sound that wants to be free to come out of you.

If you are in a public place where you can't voice your release, you can probably still give good sigh without attracting undue attention.  Give it a try.  The more sound you can make, the better you will feel, but it's not necessary.

Listening For Answers

As you are in the center of the labyrinth, and as you wind your way back out into the real world again, listen for answers to your request. Expect the unexpected.  Answers can come in many forms.  You might suddenly recall a bit of conversation from days ago, or a memory from years ago.

The answer might not come for a few days.  You might recognize it as a repeated reference made by unconnected people in varying situations.

But the answer will come.  If you are sincere and actively listening, the answer will come.

Think and Thank

Whenever you are done with a labyrinth walk, stop to THINK about the blessings in you life, think about the answers you were given and then give THANKS.  "Think and Thank" is the best philosophy of life that we know of.

What If I Don't Get My Healing Or Answer?

If you really don't think you received a healing (and notice we said, "A healing", not "the healing you wanted"), if you feel you didn't receive an answer, then look inside yourself.  See if you are blocking the action of the Spirit in your life.

An excellent resource is Why People Don't Heal and How They Can  by Carolyn Myss.
