Peace Prayer Circle

Background:

Following the events of 9/11/2001, we spent countless hours discussing the terrorist attacks, watching television shows, reading, and talking with friends.  Ultimately, we decided that there was no way to understand the need for the deaths of so many innocent people.  It was definitely a time of questioning every belief we held.  Why is this happening?  Will more attacks occur?  Will we ever feel safe again?  How do we stop this violence?  Will our leaders react wisely or will they begin the third world war?  Will humanity ever realize that We Are All One, all part of the same creation?  Will we ever learn to love one another and care for each other?  Where was God when all this happened?

At the time, we were listening to an audio tape package created in 1998 by Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra called "Creating Your World The Way You Really Want It To Be".  On the tapes they are speaking of the power of meditation and Wayne Dyer said that it is his belief that world peace is possible if he can get one million people to commit to meditating about peace everyday. The power of prayer and meditation expands exponentially when the intentions of many are focused together.

We decided to take that concept and put it into action...

What you can do:

We are asking one million people from around the world to commit to either praying for or meditating on world peace at least four times a day:  upon waking up, before each meal and before going to sleep at night.  (If you are fasting for peace, your fast is certainly an on-going prayer.)

Desmond M. Tutu:  Archbishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Cape Town, South Africa, winner of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize.

"Forgiveness and reconciliation are not cheap. They are costly. After all, they cost God the death of God’s Son.

I would say to Osama bin Laden: “Remember you are a child of God and behave like one.” I would like to say to President Bush: “Remember you are a child of God, and behave like one.” [Click here to continue reading]

Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Buddhist monk who was nominated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"If I were given the opportunity to be face to face with Osama bin Laden, the first thing I would do is listen. I would try to understand why he had acted in that cruel way. I would try to understand all of the suffering that had led him to violence..."  [Click here to continue reading]

The American Muslim Political Coordination Council (AMPCC),

"American Muslims utterly condemn what are apparently vicious and cowardly acts of terrorism against innocent civilians. We join with all Americans in calling for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators. No political cause could ever be assisted by such immoral acts."

Prayers

May you be at peace.
May your heart remain open,
May you awaken to the light of your own true nature,
May you be healed.
May you be a source of healing for all beings.

May there be peace on earth,
May the hearts of all people be open to themselves and to each other,
May all people awaken to the light of their own true nature,
May all creation be blessed and be a blessing to All That Is.

The St Francis Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy;

Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood,
as to understand,
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving
that we receive,
it is in pardoning
that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying
that we are born to eternal life.

Earth Prayer

by Mark Nepo

O Endless Creator, Force of Life, Seat of the Unconscious, Dharma, Atman, Ra, Qalb, Dear Center of our Love, Christlight, Yaweh, Allah, Mawu, Mother of the Universe...

Let us, when swimming with the stream, become the stream...
Let us, when moving with the music, become the music...
Let us, when rocking the wounded, become the suffering...
Let us live deep enough till there is only one direction...
and slow enough till there is only the beginning of time...
and loud enough in our hearts till there is no need to speak...
Let us live in our hands till our minds grow humble as a root...
Let us live for the grace beneath all we want, let us see it in everything and everyone, till we admit to the mystery that when I look deep enough into you, I find me, and when you dare to hear my fear in the recess of your heart, you recognize it as your secret which you thought no one else knew...

O let us embrace that unexpected moment of unity as the atom of God...
Let us have the courage to hold each other when we break and worship what unfolds...
O nameless spirit that is not done with us, let us love without a net beyond the fear of death until the speck of peace we guard so well becomes the world.

Inspiring Quotes

If anyone slays a person, unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land, it would be as if he slew all people.  And if anyone saves a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all people.
--Qur'an  (The Koran) 5:32

"Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong.  Rather, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good, and not to do wrong if they do evil."
-- The Prophet Muhammad (reported by Tirmidhi)

The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between political parties either-- but right through every human heart.
--Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn

Let us not look back in anger, or forward with fear, but around in awareness.
-- James Thurber, American humorist

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness
cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
-- Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, American hero and civil rights activist

What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matter compared to what lies within us.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson, American philosopher and writer

Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.
-- John F. Kennedy, American World War II hero; author of "Profiles in Courage"; assassinated American President

Why Americans are hated:

According to Osama bin Laden's "Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places"

"The latest and the greatest of [the] aggressions, incurred by the Muslims since the death of the Prophet . . . is the occupation of the land of the two Holy Places - the foundation of the house of Islam, the place of the revelation, the source of the message and the place of the noble Ka'ba, the Qiblah of all Muslims — by the armies of the American Crusaders and their allies."

The declaration is presented as the first step in "correcting what had happened to the Islamic world in general, and the Land of the two Holy Places in particular. . . Today . . . the sons of the two Holy Places, have begun their Jihad in the cause of Allah, to expel the occupying enemy out of the country of the two Holy places."

Bin Ladin sees the new Islamic Front as the vehicle that will eventually vanquish the American enemy:

"The movement is driving fast and light forward. And I am sure of our victory with Allah’s help against America and the Jews . . . After the Americans entered the Holy Land, many emotions were roused in the Muslim world, more than we have seen before. . . The cooperation is expanding between general supporters of this religion. From this effort, the International Islamic Front for the Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders was formed, which we are a member of with other groups."

The ideology  of the Al Qa'ida has been defined in 3 goals:
  1. Radicalize existing Islamic groups and create Islamic groups where none exist.
  2. Advocate destruction of the United States, which is seen as the chief obstacle to reform in Muslim societies.
  3. Support Muslim fighters in Afghanistan, Algeria, Bosnia, Chechnya, Eritera, Kosova, Pakistan, Somalia, Tajikistan, Philippines and Yemen.
